    • Hello everyone, here are the latest news from the predator yard 108. I have changed the stern mold. It was not really easy to remove the "hood" in plaster, but with a bit of strength and determination I succeeded.

I carried out some tests of "molding" of the stern divar with different materials: spray putty, epoxy resin and two-component polyurethane in the form of a foam. I obtained the best result with the hand of epoxy resin brushed in the mold and then the filling with the polyurethane foam.

I made the "hood" (or counter-mold) in plaster for the bow deckhouse. The plastered bandages are excellent for obtaining a solid and well finished counter-mold.

Finally I gave a hand of moldable silicone rubber to the molding of the primary deckhouse, to eliminate any holes and depressions that could limit the extraction of the hood.

      Ciao ciao.

    • Hello everyone, another evening spent doing the orthopedic. I plastered the mold of the primary deckhouse to make the rubber support counter-mold. Also this time I used the plaster bandages, excellent for practicality of laying and taking shapes.
I made the first stern mold, using the usual two-component polyurethane foam. It did not come very well, due to the withdrawal of the spray putty that I had previously sprayed in the mold. The next I do it using the resin ball and glass balls, which never betray the expectations.
      Here are the pictures:

    • Very interesting method. I wonder how the stairs will be so clean, and the back hatch so bad. Do you have problems with the connection of silicone and plaster?

I found out, that mixing of glass components with silicone make the mould much stronger. Then the surface looks like a hedgehog and can hold the plaster much better.

    • Hi Ernst, I tried to give a 1K spray putty. I exaggerated with the thickness and the putty has shrunk (the solvent has evaporated reducing the volume), detaching itself from the silicone mold. Therefore I removed it before proceeding with the injection of polyurethane. On the stairs, the putty spray remained well adherent to the mold, so I did not remove it and it was well attached to the polyurethane foam. I will make the next clones with a coat of epoxy gelcoat, so I will not have problems of delamination from the mold. The plaster mold adheres perfectly with the silicone rubber skin, so there are no deformations of the mold.
You know, Ernst, in Italy there are many restorers of works of art, who have explained to me many things about how to best use mastics, resins and silicone rubbers. They use them to restore works of art in wood, stone and even bronze. The plaster molding technique is very common and valid.

      Ciao ciao.
      ALIMURIMETA
    • I know the modern methods of your restorers, making moulds of old italian arts. When I was younger, in the late 70ties, I had to learn about working with plaster. It was prerequisite for further education in the studio of Luigi Colani, who told me to learn this, and then maybe...
So I learned every year a little bit and in the last 20 years more about silicone and the possibilities to work with it. Ok, a friend is a dental technician with a large laboratory, so I could test a lot of material :)

    • Hi Francesco,

amazing what you are showing here!

Did you test the long-term resistance of the polyurethane foam you are using? Some of the foams still react after years of usage due to difference in humidity or temperature of the surrounding air. 1k-foams react on humidity - even when the outer areas of the foam have reached the end of reaction, the inside might still be willing to react. Once the part ist lightly damaged (i. e. microcracks, scratches) and humidity/water gets to the inner areas, the foam will grow again. 2k-foams react on temperature and/or on humidity. I have seen door frames getting out of shape due to growing pu-foam by changes of humidity. And I have a camping refrigerator which has been sitting in the sun. The lid was cracked open by the growing pu-foam insulation inside.. It almost doubled its size :(

      All the best wishes
      Tim
    • Hi Tim, in truth I did not think about the problem of swelling due to humidity. Actually the foam I'm going to use is two-part. Once cross-linked it is hard and compact. In the data sheet there are no problems with swelling due to humidity. The foam is resistant to solvents such as acetone and gasoline. I'll pass the link where you can download the technical data sheet of the product.

    • Hello everyone, last night I removed the plaster molding from the rubber mold and extracted the wooden master of the deckhouse. Apparently there are no imperfections. The rubber has copied all the details well. Now I have to spread a layer of epoxy resin thickened with silica (my gelcoat) in the mold and then make the fiberglass copy.

    • Hello everyone, I started the lamination phase of the deckhouse with epoxy resin and glass fiber. I applied a first thin layer of glass fabric of 49 gr / mq, and then three layers of 80 gr / mq and a layer of 110 gr / mq.

To fill and make solid the head and tail part of the deckhouse, I will use the bicomponent foam polyurethane.

    • Hello everyone, as anticipated in the previous message, I filled the cavities of the deckhouse at the top and in the tail with the foam polyurethane. To limit the consumption of the product, I made a sort of formwork with cardboard.

The deckhouse has some defects, probably due to some air bubbles left between the gelcoat and the polyurethane foam. There is no roof tip aft and a part of the right-hand stanchion aft. I solved it with two-component epoxy paste, similar to plasticine.

    • Hello everyone. Yesterday evening I started assembling the predator hydrojet propulsion system. On paper it seems like a walk, but then, as often happens, in practice I had to take a while to fix the jets. I encountered two problems: the first, easy to solve, is the presence of a reinforcement beam in the bottom of the hull. It was enough to grind it with the grinder and I could make the jet tunnel adhere to the bottom of the hull. Another problem, this more annoying: the stern closure is not vertical. This means that the locking and securing flange of the jet stator is detached from the stern wall. Therefore I had to realize a sort of counter-flange of PVC thickness, suitably inclined, to guarantee the perfect orthogonality of the "black" flange with the bottom of the hull.

    • Hello everyone, I glued the jets to the hull. I used epoxy resin loaded with glass microspheres and colloidal silica, obtaining the usual welded glue

To keep the jets crushed at the bottom of the hull, I used two steel weights. At the moment I have not yet drilled the openings of the jets on the bottom of the hull. I will do it after the resin has hardened well.

The silicone tubes that you see in the picture are the sockets for cooling. I've already applied them because inserting them after gluing jets would have been a problem.

    • Hello everyone, finally I resumed the construction of the predator, after a "technical stop" for various commitments.

I made the holes for the portholes in the hull and inserted the moldings printed in 3D

    • Hi all, latest updates from the predator shipyard. I have made the openings of the jacks of load of the hydrojets. The instructions are to glue them first to the hull and then cut the bottom of the hull.

    • Hello everyone, last from the predator yard 108. I have finished and trimmed the various elements that make up the bridge in "teak". I found a slight discrepancy of scale of the edges of the bridge compared to those of the deckhouse. Probably the import of the vector drawing ile in the plotter sw did not work very well. Patience, I'll settle for it and go back with scalpels and a lot of patience ;)

    • Hi all, another short progress work.

I have defined the position and configuration of the servos for the control of the rudders and the back-flaps of the hydrojets. I used the 3D printed saddles and bowden cables, used in aeromodelling to manage the movements of the flaps and ailerons. In total I need 3 servos: one for the simultaneous management of the reversing flaps and two for the rotation of the helm of the jets.
